OUR YOUNG PEOPLE, THEIR LOVED ONES, THEIR CARERS & THEIR PROTECTORS
There’s no denying young trans people are at the centre of transphobic bullies’ hypocrisy. The banning of puberty blockers for trans kids under the guise of being unsafe, whilst still available for cisgender kids going through early puberty, is proof enough.
But don’t let the media fool you. Despite the cruelty of centring trans youth at the heart of the UK’s culture wars, trans kids are busy being kids. They’re joining art clubs, staging their own protests, coming to Pride rallies (with or without their families, just like other teenagers) and playing with friends just like them.
What the UK media would have us forget, is that transphobia doesn’t only affect trans kids. It affects their school mates, their families, their carers, their teachers, their neighbours…
The beauty of the overwhelming number of heartwarming objects representing profoundly meaningful moments where families show their unequivocable support for trans siblings and children provides ample real-life evidence of just how many of us care about deeply about the wellbeing of trans children.
They are the future of gender liberation for us all.

Plaster Hand
MOT/2024/NDOTC/DUND/008
Tag Plaster cast of owner’s hand as a 10 year old, mallorca in 2011. Represents me figuring out my identity as a 13 year old. Important to me because I fixed it up from a broken state, during a time in my life I also felt fragile. This was the same year I met my internet friends who were my first trans support network, who helped me pick my name + still support me to this day. The date of donation (20/4) is the date I came out to my family in 2016 + the date of my first gender clinic appointment in 2018!

Rebekah's Secret Grandpa Book By Andy Thornton
MOT/2024/NDOTC/BRIS/005
Tag I wrote an illustrated this children's book about a trans Grandpa for my final major project on my art foundation at Oxford Brookes in 2014. I reasearched so many "ftm" people wanting it to be accurate and representative. I didn't make the viewpoint character trans as "I wasn't trans"…. good one. Looking back, all of that research was for me. I wanted to represent older trans people who we often don't see. But I also wanted to know I had a future. I told the first person ever that I might be a boy in the last week of the course.
